      Dialogue + Studio: Sampler Workshop

      Teaching artist and textile conservator Kaelyn Garcia will speak about the history of American samplers and their role in childhood education, then lead a sampler making workshop with a special embroidery pattern designed in response to the works on view. All materials will be provided. The program is limited to 18 individuals.  Kaelyn Garcia is a textile conservator and instructor living and working in New York City. She received her BFA in Fashion Design and Art History from Columbia College in Chicago. She has worked as a designer and textile instructor, specializing in weaving, embroidery, and bobbin lace in New York for more than eight years. She is the co-founder of the Brooklyn Lace Guild. She is currently working to complete a lace-making degree from the Centre d’Enseignement de la Dentelle au Fuseau in Le Puy-en-Velay, France, and has completed professional needlework courses at the Royal School of Needlework in the United Kingdom. She has held graduate internships at the Hispanic Society of America; the American Museum of Natural History; the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; and the Textile Laboratory at The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. Kaelyn is currently a post-graduate fellow in costume and textile conservation at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
