The Emptiness Cure: Transmuting Fear, Hate and Shame into Wide Open LoveInstructor: Joe Loizzo, MD, PhD - 5 Mondays at Tibet House US | April 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29; 7-9PM - Saturday Retreat at Balance Arts Center | May 4; 10AM-5PM Emptiness (Sanskrit shunyata), the most distinctive of all Buddhist teachings, is also widely considered the clearest expression of the profound healing wisdom of the Buddha’s Nirvana. In this Nalanda Institute seminar for Sustainable Happiness graduates and other wisdom seekers, Dr. Loizzowalks you through his lifelong journey grappling with the slippery idea, acquired taste, and awesome reality of emptiness, bringing the theory down to earth with perspectives from the Nalanda tradition and from modern psychology. The seminar explores the Buddha’s freeing insight—that living and non-living things are all “empty of self”—following Nalanda master Nagarjuna’s formulation of it as “the cure for all views.” It links this insight to the modern deconstructive methods of linguistic philosophy, neuropsychology and psychotherapy, which all help free our native brilliance from the blinders of self-limiting worldviews, identities, and instincts, and hence from the toxic fear, hate, and shame they maintain. Together we unpack the relevanceof emptiness to life in our interdependent age, especially its rare ability to dissolve traumatic habits that lock us into the cells of personal and cultural narcissism, and its power to unleash our full human genius for unbiased empathy and unconditional love. Finally we put our healing insight into practice through shared reflection and meditation, focusing on the deconstructive and reconstructive modes of contemplating emptiness, common to both the exoteric path of non-dual wisdom and the esoteric path of bliss-void intuition. Requirements: participants must register for the whole five session seminar and separately for the Saturday retreat. Registration: General:$125 / Tibet House US members:$112.50
