Join us for a New Perspectives tour considering select works by Nari Ward, Mariana Castillo Deball, and Adelita Husni-Bey that construct and represent structures of resilience, escape, and fugitivity. We will discuss the ways that Ward and Castillo Deball re-appropriate aesthetic modes of resistance developed and utilized by oppressed peoples in the colonial era as well as their contemporary political implications. To conclude, we will ponder how Husni-Bey offers us a template for imagining alternative societal structures and new possibilities for the future.

New Perspectives tours are led by the New Museum Teaching Fellow, an emerging scholar in art history or a related field. The topics of the tours are based on the Fellow’s ongoing research and change monthly, engaging participants in uniquely focused examinations of selected objects and installations. To read descriptions of current and upcoming New Perspectives tours, please view the calendar. New Perspectives tours are free with Museum admission. Due to limited capacity, please preregister here and meet in the Lobby at the time of the tour.

New Museum Teaching Fellow Troizel Carr is a doctoral student in the Department of Performance Studies at New York University, where he is beginning research on black children’s figurations in post-emancipation art and literature.

The New Museum is wheelchair accessible; learn more about access services and amenities here. To request accommodations, please email access@newmuseum.org or call 212.219.1222 ×235 at least three weeks in advance.Sponsors
