Social Change through Public Policy: How Centre for Civil Society Empowers Entrepreneurs in India

In 2017, more than 90 percent of Indians, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the nation’s GDP, worked outside of the law. Street vendors and entrepreneurs play a significant role in the daily lives of the Indians. Not only they provide goods and services for daily consumption but also play a significant role in the country's economy. For instance, in the state of Rajasthan 2 percent of people are involved in street vending (10 million people) but only 4 percent of them possessed legal licenses. Centre for Civil Society (CCS) exists to advance free markets and to protect these entrepreneurs—men and women who are working hard to meet needs in their communities and support their families. Thanks to CCS' successful research and advocacy campaigns, India has passed laws such as the Street Vendor Act that secure the rights of entrepreneurs to have a livelihood and foster a congenial environment for urban vendors to ply their trade without harassment or eviction from the local authorities. CCS is also one of six partners that has partnered with Atlas Network this year on a visual storytelling project which features the downstream beneficiaries of our partners’ work. One such story of a real person whose life has been transformed due to CCS’ work will be featured at this event. You won’t want to miss it! Join Atlas Network for a reception on Thursday, May 30 featuring Bhakti Patil, Assistant Manager of Development and Strategy at the Centre for Civil Society in India to learn more about the work CCS did to give entrepreneurs a new voice. This event is a part of our Global Policy Perspectives event series. Dress is business casual and drinks and hors d'oeuvres will be served. Bhakti Patil is Assistant Manager,  Development and Strategy at the Centre for Civil Society,  New Delhi, managing fundraising and grants at the organisation.  Since 2014, she has been associated with a non-profit in New Delhi,  working in institutional fundraising, documentation and communication. She holds an M.Phil and a Master’s in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her undergraduate training has been in Anthropology and Sociology at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.  Her own research engages with the core categories of Gandhian thought, particularly the ideas of Swaraj and Ahimsa, and the radical affirmation of human freedoms that they contain.   Terms and Conditions of Attendance at Atlas Network's Global Policy Perspectives Events: Your attendance at Atlas Network's Global Policy Perspectives Events indicates your agreement to the following terms and conditions.
