Kriyol Dance! Collective Workshop - Part of a Protest Garden Series

The Wyckoff House Museum is proud and pleased to have Kriyol Dance! Collective as one of their five participating partners in Protest Garden, a series of free workshops and events that focus around community connections with self care, activism and social justice. Read more below from KDC and their work for Protest Garden:  PROJECT NARRATIVE  Kriyol Dance! Collective envisions its role in the future of socially engaged arts as that which helps to cultivate community consciousness for collective healing. By creating culturally-informed work and addressing detrimental changes in physical, social, and political contexts of our community, we hope to influence the next generation of activists, visionaries, and advocates. By privileging stories and lived experiences, we hope to build the collective self. The Nou Series is an experiment in embodied knowledge, resistance, and history that prioritizes “nou” (“us” in Haitian Creole). By exploring the history of The Wyckoff House, documented memories of native Lenape peoples and enslaved Africans in Canarsie, and the migration of Black Caribbeans to Brooklyn, through a lens of muscle memory and spirituality, we hope to build a connected narrative and express it through movement. Our goal is that by positioning our bodies as museum installations we can expand and interrogate stories and processes of cultural preservation and community identity.  PROJECT ACTIVITIES: The Workshops —— The Nou Series will feature public workshops that:  1) focus on providing attendees with the opportunity to explore their own stories through movement, with the ultimate goal of communal meditation and healing.  2) aim to provide participants with the opportunity to self-care in the presence of community. In our workshops we will explore the art of the body and our embodied knowledge by using spiritual dance movement, traditional Haitian drumming, controlled breathing, concentration, whole body movement, and craft materials. As we embrace our full selves through our emotions and movements, we will encourage consistent practice and growth in a workout that centers holistic health and thoroughly acknowledges that there is healing in movement. The goal is that the participant leaves feeling open in body, mind, and soul! Protest Garden is made possible in part by the Lincoln Center Cultural Innovation Fund, which is generously supported by The Rockefeller Foundation and administered by Lincoln Center.
