Martin Kaufman: Hannah Arendt’s THE ORIGINS OF TOTALITARIANISM

Martin Kaufman: Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism Mondays 6:30 – 8:00 PM November 4, 18, 25, December 2, 9, 16 Arendt’s original and rigorous work of political philosophy attempts to make sense of the rise of fascism/totalitarianism in the 20th century, particularly in Nazi Germany and Communist Russia, and is as relevant today as it was when it was written in the 1950s. Her disquieting analysis of 19th-century trends that flowered into totalitarianism stands as a cautionary tale about current political realities. Topics include: Jews in 19th-century societies, the Dreyfus Affair, continental imperialism, race versus nation, the end of the Rights of Man, ideology and terror and the internal use of totalitarian power. All readings will be from The Origins of Totalitarianism. Book is included in the price of the class. 212.507.9580 | EmanuelStreickerNYC.org Temple Emanu-El member - $120.00 Non Member - $240.00
