Mitch Albom on the Making of an Unlikely Family

After penning Tuesdays wIth Morrie, the bestselling memoir of all time, Mitch Albom largely confined himself to fiction writing and trying the follow the lessons from his own iconic book. One of these involved "giving to others." In 2010, after Haiti's devastating earthquake, Albom took over the operations of an orphanage of 40 children in the capital city of Port Au Prince. He has been there every month since. In 2015, one of the kids he admitted, a brash and lively five-year-old girl named Chika, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Albom brought her to America, hoping U.S. medicine could quickly heal her. Instead, she melded into his life with his wife, Janine, and they spent the next two years together traveling the world in search of a cure. Along the way, he became a most unlikely family. Just as he passed along Morrie’s lessons to millions of readers, Albom now has written Finding Chika, the emotionally rich and deeply affecting story of what adults can learn about life and love from caring for a child born into the world’s most grueling poverty. The Streicker Center is honored to welcome Mitch Albom to our stage. The author of seven books that shot to the top of the New York Times bestseller list, four of which were made into award-winning television movies, Albom also operates The Have Faith Haiti orphanage and founded nine charities in his home city of Detroit.
