      Shell-ebrate Oysters 2019

Learn the incredible history of oysters and their ecological importance while supporting the Hudson River Park's Estuary Lab staff in their oyster research and restoration efforts. Participants will learn to monitor oyster populations by measuring and weighing oyster clusters, and interact with small critters that use oyster reefs as habitat.  Oysters have a long history in NYC’s waters. In fact, oyster reefs used to be so abundant in the Hudson River Estuary, that oysters were sold by street vendors, think: oyster carts instead of hotdog carts! NYC was the oyster trading capital of the world. Oysters are keystone species providing habitat for many other marine species and play an important role in filtering the Hudson River. Unfortunately, for many years, oysters have been in decline due to overharvesting, industrial pollutants, sewage and sedimentation. Today, it is rare to find a wild oyster in the River.
