      Tai Chi at the Museum with Pieter Sommen

      Tai Chi is a Chinese form of exercise: a series of movements practiced in a slow and focused manner, coordinated with breathing. Each posture flows into the next one without pausing, creating a constant motion in the body. It is low impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints, making it generally safe to practice for all fitness levels. Benefits may include decreased stress and anxiety, improved mood, improved flexibility, balance, and agility. You may experience some of the benefits right away. Others, like balance and agility, may increase over time. Classes are 10 – 11 am, and cost $10 per person. Pieter Sommen became interested in Tai Chi as he was studying Chinese medicine. Till his retirement, he taught Shiatsu (Japanese acupressure massage), Chinese massage and acupuncture at The Swedish Institute in Manhattan and Pacific College of Oriental Medicine for over 20 years. He was head of the Eastern Department at the Massage School of the Swedish Institute. He studied Tai Chi with Miao Fu Rong, Jeffrey Yuen, William Chen and still studies with Luke Faust and Dena Reynolds in their Monroe Movement space.
