TOOLS OF TYRANNY: A LECTURE WITH THEO DEUTINGER

How do design and architecture voluntarily or involuntarily act as helping hands for oppression? From border walls to government surveillance, nation states are using design to help expand and protect their spheres of influence.  Building on discussions from State of Tyranny, Theo Deutinger addresses how globalization has led to ideas of ownership and exclusion that are manifested in everyday physical barriers. Copies of The Tyranny Trail accompany the discussion. The Tyranny Trail is a map originally created for Storefront of Art and Architecture that highlights fixtures of buildings and neighborhoods that serve as agents of control over collective, communal, and politically active public life. Theo's book Handbook of Tyranny will be available for sale in The A/D/O Shop.  About Theo Theo Deutinger is an architect, writer, and designer of socio-cultural studies. He is the founder and head of TD, an office that combines architecture with research, visualization, and conceptual thinking in all scale levels from global planning, urban master plans and architecture to graphical and journalistic work.
