VISIONS OF THE AFTERLIFE; A NEW EXHIBITION CURATED BY MORBID ANATOMY AT GREEN-WOOD

Morbid Anatomy and The Green-Wood Cemetery are partnering, once again, to present a new exhibition, Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory: Visions of the Afterlife in the Catholic Tradition. The exhibition explores Catholic visions of the afterlife that have stirred the popular imagination and served to steer the collective moral compass for centuries.

Items on display include paintings, photographs, and sculptures, as well as antique books and prints dating from the seventeenth century to the present, sourced from around the world. The exhibition boasts an especially rich collection of Latin American masks, ex-votos (devotional paintings), and retablos (Mexican outsider art that depicts religious themes.)

The various art, artifacts, and ephemera are drawn from the greater Morbid Anatomy community and The Green-Wood Historic Fund Collections, featuring works by artists Mark Dion, Phyllis Galembo, and Shannon Taggart, and pieces loaned from the collections of Eva Aridjis; Invisible Gallery; Stephen Romano Gallery; Evan Michelson of the Science Channel show, Oddities; and more.

      WHEN: Saturdays and Sundays, from May 11, 2019 – June 30, 2019; 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

For those interested in visiting outside of these hours, please email events@green-wood.com.

Please note, the exhibition and library space are not handicapped accessible.
